What are trial deposits? How do I verify them?

Trial deposits are simply test deposits we make into the account you are using to fund your new HSBC Direct account. It's a way for us to verify that you're the account owner. We start by making two small deposits to that account, usually for less than $1.00 each. To verify your trial deposits:

  1. Look for an e-mail from HSBC Direct within 3 business days of submitting your application, notifying you that we've made the trial deposits to your account.
  2. Check the values of the two deposits either online or by calling the bank where you have your funding account.
  3. Confirm your deposits at HSBCDirect.com. Choose “Resume Application,” then “I would like to sign in to an existing application.” Follow the instructions to confirm your deposits.
  4. Enter the amounts carefully. You'll have three chances to do so correctly. After that, you'll need to fund your account by mailing a check.

If you get an error message stating “You cannot use this account,” you'll need to use a different account to fund your initial deposit.

What is an HSBC Direct Online Certificate of Deposit (CD)?

It's a high-yield Certificate of Deposit, which provides a fixed rate of return for the term of the product. With no monthly fees, you are guaranteed a specific amount at the maturity date, provided no early withdrawals are made from the account.

With HSBC Direct Online CDs, you can automatically roll over your matured HSBC Direct Online CD to an HSBC Direct Online CD of similar term at the then-current interest rate and APY or transfer your CD principal and interest to the Online Payment Account or Online Savings Account within the grace period without penalty.

What is an Online Savings Account?

It's a high-yield savings account you manage online to make the most of your savings. There are no monthly fees, no balance minimums, and you can access your money anytime. You can link your Online Savings Account to any other account, so it's just as easy to add to your savings as it is to access it.

What is an Online Payment Account?

It's a new type of account that allows you to earn interest on the money you keep on hand to pay bills, make purchases, and cover everyday expenses. There's no minimum balance or fees. Pair it with an Online Savings Account and you'll earn in two places instead of one. You can send payments electronically wherever you need, then move any extra cash into savings where it can grow even more.

Where do I do my banking?

HSBC Direct operates exclusively online, so you can manage your account anywhere you can access the Internet. With the HSBC Direct ATM or debit card, you can use HSBC ATMs for many basic transactions as well.

How do I set up Direct Deposits to my Online Savings or Online Payment Account?

Check with your employer or other paying institution (e.g., Social Security, Insurance Annuity firm) to see if they allow direct deposits and how to set them up. The institution providing your regular payments will need both your account number and our routing number: 022000020.

Note: Direct Deposits are not allowed into an HSBC Direct Online CD.

How do I set up recurring transfers between accounts for my Online Savings or Online Payment Accounts?

Click on the Bank-to-Bank Transfers tab within Personal Internet Banking (a pop-up window will appear). Then:

  1. Within the pop-up window, find the Transfer Funds tab.
  2. Select 'Recurring Transfer."
  3. Choose the account you want to transfer money from and enter the amount you want to transfer.
  4. Choose how often you want to transfer those funds (from every week to every 3 months).

Set up as many Recurring Transfer Plans as you want. There's no fee.

Note: Recurring transfers are not allowed for an HSBC Direct Online CD.

What do I do if I forget my username and password?

If you forget your username, call us at 1-800-975-4722 and we'll be happy to remind you. If you forget your password, click on the "Forgot Your Password" option on the Log-on page for simple instructions.

How do I know my account is secure?

All of our banking systems are protected with the latest available technology. When you log on to your account, you'll be asked for your customer username, password, and security key. Only you can access your HSBC Direct accounts, make transfers to your linked accounts, or perform other related banking requests.

Learn more about security by visiting the security link at the bottom of this page.
